Two wolves bonded by a contract neither of them signed must prove they are incompatible, because pack law dissolves a mate bond only at a public hearing where each one has to describe the other, truthfully, under an oath that burns a lie.
Nadia Voss, twenty-six, is the Halloway Pack’s bond-clerk; she writes and files the contracts that join wolves to each other and has never once been asked whether she wanted one. Olivier Kerr, thirty-one, runs the pack’s mill and, when asked, its violence. When the council decides to end a forty-year feud between their two families, it does what the law allows and files a bond between them, and neither of them is consulted. Pack law will not dissolve a bond by agreement, only at a Standing hearing where both parties testify against each other under an oath that burns a lie, and the elder sets the date for the winter. So the two of them spend the season inside one mile of each other, gathering the evidence that will set them free, and the evidence is intimacy. Nobody in the pack expects the hearing to go the way it does.
