Nell Ashby is twenty-one, raised at the mill and sent to the Register House because she writes a clean hand. The registrar, Maude Ferrier, has held the post thirty years and teaches by example: date first, name last, margin never. Her first entry names a man, his trade and the river, and by evening he is dead at Marrow Bend, exactly as written. Turning the page, Nell finds her own name there, dated to the last day of autumn. She asks the one question no apprentice has asked in thirty years, the name of the previous registrar, and learns there was one, and that she died on a date that also sits in the margin beside Nell’s own.
