Odile Vance sells her a blank paper slip for a week’s rent and explains the trade in ten seconds: name the person you want spared, and the misfortune goes elsewhere before dawn, to whoever the slip chooses. Nessa, who has never walked past a broken thing, sets herself a rule on the first day – one mercy per day, no exceptions. She saves a ferryman’s rudder and a cart up the lane loses a wheel; she stops a widow’s cough and a dog on the same street goes lame.
