Emmett Fole, thirty-four, was eight years old when he found out he lives every moment twice. He receives the next sixty seconds of his own senses as a memory of something that has not happened yet, complete and accurate, arriving a beat before he needs it. What he learned, and what the whole series is about, is that the forecast is for the future in which he does nothing unusual: the instant he acts on it, it is void, and he is blind until a new one arrives. He keeps Ferry Nine, a toll depot of two hundred people, by spending exactly one intervention per minute. Then a strategist named Odile Braithe takes the ridge above him, counts his seconds from a distance for three weeks, and starts building attacks that need him to stop two things at once.
