There were seven people and tins for five, and the shelter held a vote, and the log Nadia keeps still has one line on its first page that she has never read out loud. Since that night, at nine o’clock exactly, something outside has knocked three long and two short, the same five strokes, sixty nights running. Everyone at the table knows the rhythm. Nobody has said whose it is. When Mireille, the youngest of them, knocks back for the first time, the door answers, and the room has to start deciding whether a thing they agreed to forget can stay forgotten while it is standing on the other side of four inches of steel.
