Wei Song, nineteen, has served gruel to outer disciples for four years. He has no spiritual root, no sponsor and no future past the ninth rank. On an unremarkable morning a system binds to him: a pale blue glyph no one else can see, which issues quests he cannot decline. The first quest is to refuse an elder’s order. The reward is a forbidden scripture. The penalty for failing is unstated, which he correctly reads as worse. He refuses, in public, in front of two hundred disciples, and the sect never treats him as furniture again.
